World Biogas Congress Series to put spotlight on Brazil and India’s biogas ambitions

The World Biogas Association, a global trade body, will host two high level events in India and Brazil this October to facilitate the rapid deployment and adoption of biogas technologies as both countries strive to become green energy leaders in their regions.

  • The World Biogas Association BRAZIL Congress 2024 will take place in Foz do Iguaçu, Parana, on 1 October coinciding with the G20 energy meetings taking place in the same location.
  • The World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024 will take place in New Delhi on 23-24 October.

Launched in 2023 by the World Biogas Association (WBA), the WBA Congress Series will reach Brazil and India next month to provide policy makers, business leaders and investors with a powerful platform on which to explore how best to deploy anaerobic digestion and biogas technologies in their countries as part of their green energy transition towards energy, climate and food security and to meet their Net Zero commitments.

Both events will serve as thought-leadership forums where key stakeholders will discuss the strategies and solutions necessary to scale up the biogas industry in these significant emerging markets.

Brazil and India have developed close connections over their successive presidency of the G20 (India handed over to Brazil at the end of 2023), the BRICS (1) partnership and their recently announced Global Biofuels Alliance cooperation agreement towards a resilient and sustainable energy landscape. They are both engaged in ambitious plans to develop biogas in their countries – an energy source (produced through anaerobic digestion) recognised by UNEP/CCAC as one of the ‘fastest and most cost-effective technologies’ to keep the world on track to deliver the Paris Agreement (UNEP/CCAC).

The biogas sector addresses the urgent need to treat and recycle the organic wastes that are polluting our oceans and prevent them from being the climate regulator they should be”. explains Charlotte Morton, WBA Chief Executive. “It also captures the methane they emit, which is a major factor of climate change as identified by the Global Methane Pledge to which over 150 countries have signed up since COP21.

Brazil and India have both recognised the value of anaerobic digestion and biogas in the delivery of their renewable energy strategies, and we’re delighted to take the World Biogas Association Congress Series to nations which have taken a firm regional lead in turning to biogas to achieve energy independence, address climate change and create a circular green economy.

The World Biogas Association Congress Series draws on a unique network of corporate members, national associations and global organisations to enable countries to capitalise on this opportunity to secure energy and food security, as well as meet their Net Zero commitments. We are also looking forward to presenting at these forums the findings of our ground-breaking #MakingBiogasHappen programme, aimed at promoting best practice and standardisation to facilitate the growth of the industry sustainably.”

The World Biogas Association BRAZIL Congress 2024 on 1 October in Foz do Iguaçu, is scheduled to coincide with key G20 energy meetings being held in the city.  Organised in partnership with local organisations ABiogás and CIBiogás, it will feature distinguished speakers including Enio Verri, Director-General, Itaipu Binacional; Paolo Frankl, Head of the Renewable Energy Division, International Energy Agency; Luis Zavaleta, LatAm Environmental Sustainability & Compliance Director, PepsiCo and Rana Adib, Executive Director.  The event will include a site visit to Unidade de Biometano Itaipu and Unidade de Produção de Hidrocarbonetos Renovaveis on 30 September followed the same day by a Welcome Reception.  More information and full programme.

On 23-24 October, the WBA team will be in New Delhi for the 2nd World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024, organised in partnership with Iten Media, which will feature senior representatives of the Government of India, including Pankaj Jain, Secretary, MoPNG (invited);  Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister; Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries; Roopa Mishra, Joint Secretary, MoHUA, Esha Srivastava, Joint Secretary, MoPNG; and Sangita Kasture, Scientist G, MNRE.  Also speaking at the event will be Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator, India; Dr. N. P. Singh, Senior Technical Adviser, UNIDO; Dr. Dilip Khare, Advisor Biogas, GGGI, Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive, WBA; and Dr Pradeep Monga, Senior Advisor and Policy Director, WBA.  More information and full programme.

Over the last year, WBA has simultaneously worked on its flagship #MakingBiogasHappen Programme, developing a Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and an International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS). These initiatives aim to standardise regulations and certification practices worldwide, fostering exponential growth across the biogas sector. Both India and Brazil are primed to adapt these best practices and certification scheme to their domestic market.

Notes to editors

  • The World Biogas Congress Series is an ambitious international programme aimed at rapidly scaling up biogas development in new and existing markets, to enable countries to achieve their Net Zero commitments. The Congress Series offers an innovative platform for collaboration among key bioenergy stakeholders from government and industry to optimise the bioresources at its disposal, resolve barriers to growth, forge partnerships and opportunities for inward investment, and ensure best practice is broadcast and shared with all involved in biogas across the globe. The series will showcase biogas innovations and promote collaboration between public, private, and civil society stakeholders to stimulate inward investment and market development in support of broader bioenergy and net zero targets.
  • Launched at COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016, the World Biogas Association is the global trade association for the biogas, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors, and is dedicated to facilitating the recycling of all organic wastes, crop residues and break crops through biogas technologies such as anaerobic digestion (AD) globally. It believes that the global adoption of these technologies is a multi-faceted opportunity to produce clean, renewable energy, bioCO2 and natural fertilisers while resolving global issues related to development, public health and economic growth. www.worldbiogasassociation.org
