Bioenergy Association of Ukraine Requests Urgent Support from International Biogas Community

Amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure and the looming winter, the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) made an appeal for support to delegates at the WBA National Associations Roundtable meeting in Birmingham this July. The request cites an urgent need for decentralised energy solutions to ensure the country’s energy security and resilience. Biogas represents a key technology to achieve this.

WBA has agreed to amplify UABIO’s request. We call on our members and the international biogas community to help supply Ukraine with urgent aid in the form of surplus and second-hand anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas systems.

The letter from UABIO (posted in full below) outlines two primary requests aimed at transforming and securing Ukraine’s energy landscape:

  1. Support for Modular/Small Biogas Technology: UABIO stresses the importance of establishing a network of biogas and biomethane plants. These installations should be standardised, quickly installable, cost-effective and scalable. Such a network will significantly enhance energy resilience, reduce reliance on centralised systems and promote sustainability through renewable energy sources.
  2. Provision of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems: UABIO seeks assistance in supplying CHP generators that utilise biogas, biomethane and natural gas. These systems are essential for decentralised electricity production, providing a reliable and efficient energy supply. Standardised, containerised CHP units can be rapidly deployed near critical infrastructure, ensuring continuous energy provision even in the face of disruptions.

By adopting these strategies, Ukraine aims to achieve a more resilient and secure energy model, leveraging the expertise and support of other national biogas associations and equipment producers. The full text of UABIO’s letter, included below, provides a comprehensive overview of their detailed proposals and the anticipated benefits for Ukraine’s energy sector.

Contact details for UABIO can be found at the bottom of their official letter.
